In its first visit to St. Louis since 2003, the Paco Peña Flamenco Dance
Company returns to present its sensational Flamenco Vivo, a musical
journey that displays the highest level of modern flamenco, while
staying true to its most primitive and pure forms.
This quintessential Spanish ensemble employs only the most authentic
practitioners of the art, in a go-for-broke performance by three
dancers, singer, percussionist, and three guitarists, including the
renowned Paco Peña. Flamenco originated in the Andalucian region of
southern Spain from the melding of various cultures, Roman, Jewish,
Moorish, and gypsy among them. Still evolving, the true art of flamenco
is deeply emotional, a highly disciplined art conveying the human
passions of longing, fear, lust, and anguish--through strict rhythmic
structures within which the artists improvise.
A Highlight Performance Co-sponsored with financial assistance from the
Whitaker Foundation, and presented as a Special Project with the St.
Louis Regional Arts Commission in Celebration of the Guitar Society’s
50th Anniversary Year (2013).
