Bringing the islands to Granite City was the goal for Keith "Kika" Kawabata.
The menu at Kika's doesn't look much different from what you would find at a diner in any town; the restaurant has daily specials like chicken and dumplings, homemade chili and all-you-can-eat fried catfish on Fridays.
The "Hawaiian touch" comes in on Kawabata's teriyaki dishes, like chicken, steak, pork, and the Hawaiian philly steak. Kawabata makes his sauce from scratch, adding in a handful of spices, including garlic and ginger. Putting an island twist on an American classic, Kika's club sandwich is served with grilled chicken and bone-in ham. All dishes at Kika's are cooked to order, including a few off-menu Hawaiian delicacies.
"I want people to know we're not 'exotic.' We're American with a Hawaiian touch."
